a wide range of school tasks

During the programme you will undertake a wide range of school tasks which will include significant opportunities to observe a range of teaching approaches in your host school and partnership schools.

You will be asked to reflect and record your learning in relation to these tasks. These will be referred to in training discussions and feedback rather than submitted and marked in the traditional essay manner, as always our practice is based upon recent research regarding marking and feedback.

    work with your mentor

You will work with your mentor to engage in a combination of team teaching, small group work and whole class teaching that is both unobserved and observed. All of which are developmental and highly focussed upon the right training and advice, given at the right time.

Half termly assessments are based upon reviewing the progress of the children you have been teaching. This is evidenced through lesson observation and pupil’s outcomes which are used to identify your achievements and future targets. This process is based upon the current accountability systems in our partnership schools.

    a comprehensive introduction

Core training provides a comprehensive introduction to the wide range of Curriculum areas and pedagogy needed to become an excellent teacher.

This training is provided by current practitioners therefore ensuring that theory is supported by current practice. Where possible our trainers will conduct their sessions in school.

For example our PE trainer will invite you into her school wearing your PE kit ready to observe and engage in training opportunities with pupils and peers.

    specifically catered around Trainees needs

In addition to Core Training all Trainees will attend a monthly Twilight Check-In. These sessions are specifically catered around Trainees needs such as workload, work life balance and wellbeing.

We strongly believe these check-ins help Trainees to bond and form a learning community that will span their whole career.

    Testimonials

Here’s what Trainees say about Hull SCITT :

The most important thing I have learnt is that you shouldn’t expect too much of yourself straight away.

You cannot be perfect in everything you do and you are learning throughout your whole career. Also, progress of the children is everything!

    James

For me, a career in teaching was something I knew I wanted to pursue from a young age.

Giving something back to the community I grew up in myself has always been at the forefront of my mind. Plus, young people are pretty cool!

I appreciated how the course prepared me for teacher life.

The course has high standards; therefore, it applies pressure and challenge to ensure you are aware of the demands in teaching.

    Ashleigh

Hull SCITT gave me the opportunity to take part in an intensive and hands-on programme.

This approach, I feel, has better prepared me for the real life day-to-day workings of a classroom and wider school.

    Rachel

The SCITT programme has been the making of me. I have learned to build resilience through the many observations I had.

I learned to say when I need help and to be realistic about my expectations. I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I absolutely love my job!

Hull SCITT undoubtedly prepared me for my NQT year. It gave me extremely solid foundations to build on.

The experience of teaching almost full time by the end of the year meant that it wasn’t a shock to me during my NQT year.
